WHY IT MATTERS
The Challenge
Forty-nine of the Commonwealth’s 56 member states are islands or coastal nations. For these countries, economic and national security are inseparable from the security of the maritime domain.
Maritime security and domain awareness — our ability to understand what is happening in our waters and identify the threats within them — are therefore fundamental Commonwealth priorities.
Our programmes sit at the intersection of these challenges, asking a central question: how can Commonwealth cooperation strengthen the maritime security of member states, and help address the increasingly complex risks we collectively face?
These range from monitoring vast maritime areas with limited resources, to protecting the critical undersea infrastructure that underpins global connectivity and energy security; from recognising the essential role of Commonwealth seafarers, to strengthening the cyber security of increasingly digital and autonomous maritime systems.
The challenges are significant, but they are solvable. The Commonwealth provides a uniquely valuable platform through which member states can connect, share expertise, build capability and strengthen their collective resilience across the maritime domain.
